TAP is proud to present a solo exhibition by Odessa Dobbie.

Participants are welcomed into TAP Art Space for the evening to experience Balancing Birds, an interactive, ceramic and metal installation created by Odessa Dobbie.

The balancing bird was a mass-manufactured toy developed in the early 1990’s to teach children about the center of gravity. The birds were part of an aspect of western visual culture in the late 20th century, which has aided in the excessive reproduction of goods (i.e. Dollar stores, Costco, etc.), producing a thoughtless and obsessive consumption of new objects. In parallel with this consumption, comes the capacity to discard.

This installation consists of multiple handmade ceramic duplicates of the balancing bird, which situate themselves delicately balancing across the wall of the gallery. By inviting participants to pick up and play with the ceramic birds by balancing them on one's finger, there is the risk of mistreatment - inevitably dropping it onto the floor to its death. The beauty lies in the vulnerably and responsibility the piece requests, yet does not command the viewer to comply with; it is in their hands literally. The piece begs the question: what does the future of object consumption hold for us? The birds’ mirror glaze that covers their exteriors reflects the viewer’s own appearance on the object upon interaction. Seeing one’s self in the reflection, like Narcissus gazing at his own reflection in the pond, draws the viewer into a tension with the drowning force of their own ego. The reflection suggests contemplation of the delicate reliance between nature and humans. With this year’s Nuit Blanche theme of “The Future”, Balancing Birds invites audience members of all ages to come and play for a fun night of reflection together.

TAP est fier de présenter une exposition solo par l’artiste Odessa Dobbie.

Les participants sont invités à la soirée dans l'espace artistique TAP pour faire l'expérience de Balancing Birds, une installation interactive en céramique et en métal créée par Odessa Dobbie. L’oiseau en équilibre était un jouet fabriqué en série développé au début des années 1990 pour enseigner aux enfants le centre de gravité.

Les oiseaux faisaient partie d’un aspect de la culture visuelle occidentale de la fin du XXe siècle, qui a contribué à la reproduction excessive de biens (magasins à un dollar, Costco ect.): Produisant une consommation irréfléchie et obsessionnelle de nouveaux objets. Parallèlement à cette consommation, vient également la capacité de rejeter.

Cette installation se compose de plusieurs copies en céramique faites à la main de l’oiseau en équilibre, qui se situent délicatement en équilibre sur le mur de la galerie. En invitant les participants à jouer avec les oiseaux en céramique et à les jouer en les équilibrant au doigt, il y a un risque de mauvais traitement - le laisser tomber inévitablement sur le sol jusqu'à la mort. La beauté réside dans la vulnérabilité et la responsabilité que la pièce demande, mais ne commande pas au spectateur de se conformer: elle est entre leurs mains, littéralement. La pièce soulève la question suivante: que nous réserve l'avenir de la consommation d'objets? L’émail miroir des oiseaux qui recouvre leurs extérieurs reflète l’apparence propre du spectateur sur l’objet lors de son interaction. Se voir dans le reflet, comme Narcisse regardant son propre reflet dans l’étang, entraîne le spectateur dans une tension avec la force de noyade de son propre ego. La réflexion suggère une contemplation de la délicate relation entre la nature et les humains. Cette année, le thème «L’avenir» de la Nuit Blanche propose à Balancing Birds des spectateurs de tout âge de venir jouer ensemble pour une nuit de réflexion amusante.
